Who Should Avoid Taking Ginseng?
Our ginseng products are intended for adults aged 18 and over. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking anticoagulant medication, or currently under a doctor's care, please consult your doctor or a registered Chinese medicine practitioner before taking ginseng — this is the guidance that has always appeared on our product pages and Frequently Asked Questions page, not a rule we invented ourselves, but a general standard of responsible use.
Under 18
Our ginseng products are formulated for adults 18 and over. We do not recommend that anyone under 18 take them without guidance; if a parent is considering giving ginseng to a minor, they should first consult a paediatrician or a registered Chinese medicine practitioner.
Pregnant or Breastfeeding
Dietary and supplement choices during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be assessed by a doctor based on individual health circumstances, so we recommend that pregnant or breastfeeding women speak to their doctor before taking any ginseng product, rather than deciding on the amount or whether to take it on their own.
Anyone Taking Medication, Especially Anticoagulants
Anyone taking anticoagulant medication, or any other long-term prescription, should check with their prescribing doctor before adding any supplement to their routine, so they understand anything they need to watch for and avoid any interaction with existing medication.
Anyone Currently Under a Doctor's Care
If you are being treated by a doctor for any health condition, please get their advice before deciding whether to take a ginseng product — and never use ginseng as a substitute for medical treatment prescribed by a doctor, or as a reason to stop an existing course of treatment on your own.
Product-Specific Cautions
Beyond this general guidance, individual products may carry additional cautions depending on their format, concentration, or ingredient combination — for example, some of our topical products (such as massage oil or gel) are for external use only and must never be taken internally. We recommend reading each product page and its label carefully before purchasing, and our Quality & Certifications page has more on our general product standards.
If You Have a History of Allergic Reactions
If you have a history of allergic reactions to ginseng or other Chinese herbal ingredients, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any ginseng product — don't assume a ginseng product is automatically fine for you just because other supplements have never caused a reaction.
If You're Already Taking Other Supplements
If you're already taking other supplements or Chinese herbal ingredients, speak to your doctor or a registered Chinese medicine practitioner before adding a ginseng product, so you understand whether there's anything worth watching for between the different products, rather than combining them on your own.
Why We Frame It This Way
We deliberately keep this guidance general rather than trying to list every possible interaction or condition. Ginseng products are food and wellness products, not medicines, and we are not in a position to give individual medical advice — that judgement belongs to a doctor or registered Chinese medicine practitioner who knows your health history. Framing caution this way, as a prompt to have that conversation rather than as a diagnosis, is the responsible approach for a retailer.
What to Do If You're Unsure
The guidance above is general, and it is not an exhaustive list for every individual circumstance or health condition. If you have any health concerns at all, always consult a doctor or a registered Chinese medicine practitioner rather than deciding on your own or relying on non-professional advice.
This article is for reference only and does not constitute medical advice. Ginseng products are not medicines and cannot treat or prevent any disease. If you have health concerns, please consult a doctor or a registered Chinese medicine practitioner.
